5 Warning Signs Your Fence Won't Survive Hurricane Season

1. Posts that wobble or lean at the base

Push gently on a few posts along the fence line. Any give at ground level usually means the footing has loosened or the post itself has started rotting or rusting where it meets the soil — exactly where sustained wind load will find the weak point first.

2. Panels or pickets that are already cracked or split

Small cracks don't need to be a full repair today, but they're the first place high wind gets a grip and starts peeling material away. Catching these before hurricane season is far cheaper than a full-panel replacement after.

3. A gate that no longer latches cleanly

A misaligned or sagging gate is often the first sign that a fence line has shifted. It's also one of the most common failure points during storms, since a swinging, unlatched gate can take panels with it.

4. Rust streaking or discoloration at metal joints

On aluminum and chain-link fencing, rust streaks or corrosion at hardware points signal that protective coatings have worn through — a maintenance issue now, a structural one later.

5. A fence that's more than 10-15 years old with no recent inspection

Age alone doesn't condemn a fence, but an older fence that hasn't been inspected recently is the most common source of surprise storm damage. A quick walkthrough before hurricane season catches most of what would otherwise fail during it.
