Sandy soil drains fast and compacts loosely, which means a fence post set in sand alone has less surrounding resistance to lateral movement than the same post set in denser soil. Under sustained wind load, that difference shows up as posts that gradually loosen over time.
Much of Broward County sits on a water table close to the surface, especially in low-lying areas. Ground that's frequently saturated softens further around a post base, and repeated wet-dry cycles can accelerate wood rot or metal corrosion right at the point where the post needs to be strongest.
A proper concrete footing, set to an adequate depth, gives a post something denser than the surrounding sand to resist against. Posts set without an adequate footing — or with a footing that's too shallow — are the ones that tend to lean first when the ground gets saturated.
If a post has failed once due to soil conditions, replacing it with the same shallow-set approach usually just delays a repeat failure. A repair that addresses the footing depth and drainage around the post tends to hold up much longer than a like-for-like swap.
Standing water that lingers near fence posts after rain, visible settling or a slight lean developing gradually rather than suddenly, and posts near low points in the yard are all worth checking first when soil conditions are the likely cause.
